In many historical cases, enslavement occurred as a result of violating the law, becoming indebted, suffering a military defeat, or exploitation for cheap labor; other forms of slavery began along demographic boundaries, such as race or sex.
In chattel slavery, the slave is considered, legally, the personal property (chattel) of the slave owner. To this form of slavery do we draw our attention? Jesus talks about spiritual slavery this way, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." Before someone attempts to state that Jesus is talking about hired servitude, let me provide the meaning of the Greek word. The Greek word "doulos" means a slave of servile condition. This is not a position of debt repayment. This is slavery by force. The Apostle Paul also says a thing or two about spirituality chattel slavery in Romans 6:16, "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness?" From Paul's statement here, he leaves the impression that obedience to either sin or righteousness is a choice of our own. But whoever you choose to obey, to them you will be a slave.
These two statements are the primary reasons why Israel could not "keep the Commandments" and found themselves experiencing the wrath of God. Even in our own time, the descendants of Jacob are trying to "keep the Law." Thinking that just because they keep the sabbath they can cause God's favor. They like their ignorant ancestors, are trying to work for righteousness. But Paul makes it clear that "Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law, no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin." That should be enough to make any Hebrew Israelite brother of mine to stop and think. But they don't. And what they think they know will unalive them one day.
On the other side, Christians think that just because we are not under the law, they can continue to sin. I have even heard some unimaginable idea that just because we have two commandments, it means that these commandments trump the entirety of the Law of Moses. But if you don't even "keep those commandments" how do you think you are getting a free ride into heaven? Love is the fulfillment of the law because:
1. Love will not commit adultery.
2. Love will not steal.
3. Love will not kill.
and you can add the other 610 laws found in the writings of Moses and Love fulfills those. When you love God and your neighbor you have kept the entirety of the law because the Love of God has been shed in your hearts, that is, the Mind. So when Christians "walk in the flesh" and claim that it is impossible to stop sinning, completely calling God a liar, I know that they have not been born again. And John makes that clear when he says, "No one who is born of God practices sin, because His [God's] seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God." So yes, Christians are not under the law, but Christians are to "walk in the spirit" which many of them do not know what it means to do so. But I'll give you a guess, it also means to "walk in the way."
Romans 6:16, Romans 3:19-20, 1 John 3:9
"God did not call me to control your thoughts. You can choose to believe what I teach or disbelieve. That's on you! I'm just doing what I believe God called me to do."
